Oh Jimmy, I suffer from a cavernous collection of delicate, persistent problems.
But over the years, I have worked to assemble a catalog of tricks and practices to help myself maneuver as best I can through this slippery, cunning, beauty called life.
For example, when I find myself in pain of any kind, I breathe.
I know that might sound like a cliche, or some hippy dippy solution, but for me, it always works. I take slow, deliberate, deep breaths. If I’m somewhere where I can close my eyes, I do. Be it a headache, a back ache, a broken spirit, a frightening experience — I breathe.
It’s a form of a waking mini meditation that helps me assemble and calm my thoughts, slow my heart rate and scatter my uncertainty.
It’s the only thing I’ve really found that helps pain. Aspirin and ibuprofen have never reduced physical symptoms for me, and I don’t want the negative effects they may leave on my body. Because I’m a god damn hippy and I’m ok with that.
