For those of you who aren’t familiar with Gary Gulman, please do yourselves a favor and watch his Netflix specials. Now. Even better, go see him live. He’s on tour now.

There are a lot of comedians out there with their own shows, podcasts and multimedia, but Gary is a serious(ly funny), trained professional and one of the (very) good ones.

He decided at the end of last year to start tweeting out a daily writing tip, quote or idea, some that he learned elsewhere and wanted to share, others that he figured out on his own through years of doing the comedian’s hustle.

I appreciated the ambitious idea, but quickly discovered that his insights were different than many “writing tip” digests I’ve read, and I’ve read many. They echoed my own writing mindset and touched not only me but many, many comedians and joke writers for how discerning, on point and clever they were.

The tips may be focused on how to write jokes and comedy but they are useful no matter what genre of writing your area of interest lies in.
